RESTORATION OF PAPIER-MÂCHÉ ROSETTE

Uderna Manor (Gutshof Uddern) is a knight's manor located in Tartumaa. The two-story historicist main building of Uderna Manor was constructed in the 1880s. Characteristic of historicism, the building has an asymmetrical floor plan. Several interiors of the building still retain manor-era details, including double doors, stoves, fireplaces, and rich papier-mâché ceiling and wall decorations imitating stucco in the main hall, salon, and dining room. Currently, the main building houses the Uderna care home.

The rosette in the main hall of Uderna Manor was extensively damaged due to a water leak on the second floor of the manor. After the rooms were dried using a dehumidifier, restoration could begin. The main hall's rosette consists of a central circular detail combined with four separate decorative elements depicting rich acanthus and swallows. The entire composition measures three meters in one direction and two meters in the other. All details are nailed to the ceiling.

The aim of the work was to remove the traces of moisture damage and unify the overall appearance of the rosette. This required the removal of Soviet-era overpainting. The central part of the rosette was covered with green oil paint, and the separate details with pink glue paint, which had become patchy due to moisture damage. When I removed the later paint layers, I was largely able to preserve the original grayish finish of the rosette with bronze-colored details.
