EXHIBITION "PLAYING WITH WALLPAPERS"

The idea for the exhibition was born from a fragment of a hand-painted Pompeii-style wallpaper, discovered during restoration in the 1980s at Lai 24 in Tartu. The fragment came from the home of the renowned graphic artist Woldemar Friedrich Krüger, who worked as an art teacher at the University of Tartu in the 19th century.

In addition to the example of wallpaper from Krüger's home, now part of the Tartu City Museum collection, the exhibition explored what wallpapers were like in the homes of Estonia's upper middle class, how wallpaper was chosen, and how paper was used on walls in various applications.
 
The exhibits were selected from the collections of the Tartu City Museum and the University of Tartu Museum, Professor Heli Tuksam of the Pallas University of Applied Sciences, the National Heritage Board archives, and the Estonian Academy of Arts.
 
During the exhibition, we also organized workshops, lectures, and a conference. The exhibition was supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment and the city of Tartu.
