RESEARCH OF HISTORICAL WALLPAPER LAYERS
In two rooms on the second floor of the building at Suur-Karja 3 in Tallinn's Old Town, thick layers of wallpaper from the second half of the 19th century to the 20th century were preserved on three walls.
All wallpaper layers were removed from three walls to the extent of at least one pattern repeat, i.e., in pieces measuring 60 x 120 cm. The wallpaper layers were removed from the upper part of the wall to find borders associated with the wall coverings. Stratigraphy of the layers was created from the removed wallpapers, displaying each wallpaper layer in a width of 4 cm and, if possible, with the associated border. During the study however, it was not possible to find borders for all wallpaper layers. They might have been originally missing or destroyed in the area where the wallpaper was removed. Documentation was created for the stratigraphy, which includes a description of each found wallpaper pattern, printing technique, number of printing colors, approximate dating, and analogs found in international digital wallpaper collections. The stratigraphies were framed to be later displayed on the wall. They were framed using passe-partout and high transparency ArtGlass at the framing workshop Pilt ja Raam. |
