RESTORATION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF A DINING ROOM WALLPAPER
Puurmani Manor (Schloss Talkhof) is located in Jõgeva County, Estonia. The manor, completed in 1881, was commissioned by Count Ernst Gotthard I von Manteuffel (1801–1880) and designed by German master builder Friedrich Hübbe.
Puurmani Manor is one of the most beautiful Neo-Renaissance manors in Estonia. Its interiors are richly finished – the hall and reception rooms are decorated in several historical styles typical of late 19th century architecture. The rooms feature carved wooden doors, paintings, rich stucco decor, tiled stoves and fireplaces, wooden paneling, and wallpapers. Today, the manor houses a local secondary school. Two layers of wallpaper were discovered in the manor`s dining room hidden beneath wooden paneling built in the 1920s. The older wallpaper, depicting hunting trophies and coated with brown lacquer, dates back to the early 1880s. The richly detailed wallpaper with birds and insects, imitating tapestry, dates from the turn of the century. The wallpaper was arranged into large panels using a border and matching corner details. During the work, we restored the newer layer of wallpaper. The older layer was displayed in the size of two pattern repeats. During the restoration, we removed extensive lime paint splatters from the wallpaper surface. Several areas of the border were removed from the wall to be restored in the workshop. Extensively mold-damaged parts and missing areas were replaced with digital reconstructions. |
