Hi!
I’m Kadri Kallaste. I’m a restorer who specialises in the use of paper in interiors: the study, preservation and restoration of historical wallpaper and papier-mâché decorations.
I’ve always been fascinated by spatial design, which is why I chose to study interior architecture at the Estonian Academy of Arts. I also learned about furniture design at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture at Aalto University in Finland.
It was in my PhD studies that I focussed on the preservation of fragile, expressive and truly beautiful wall coverings, and how to reuse them in interiors.
Besides the Estonian Academy of Arts, I’ve studied the art of restoration at the University of Ljubljana and the University of Applied Arts Vienna. I’ve honed my skills in the course of some exciting internships at the Art Museum of Estonia, the National Archives of Slovenia and the Cole & Son wallpaper factory in England.
I’ve also worked with wallpaper as part of the team at the Institute for Paper Restoration at Schönbrunn Palace in Austria and at the German Wallpaper Museum.

I taught myself papier-mâché techniques, starting with small paper moulds while I learned about the history and characteristics of the technique. This is how I’ve come to restore large, historical papier-mâché objects.
In addition to my practical work, I’ve given lectures and organised courses at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Raikküla Manor, the ‘Kanut’ Conservation and Digitisation Centre, the Information Centre for Sustainable Renovation and a number of museums. I’ve mentored many of the next generation of restorers who are interested in wallpaper.
All of this knowledge and experience enables me to look at paper objects from many different angles. I know how to study, preserve, exhibit, design and, if desired, reconstruct them.
I can help answer all your historical wall decoration questions, so feel free to contact me!

WHAT MY CLIENTS AND COLLEAGUES HAVE SAID ABOUT ME
Anne Harmssen Head of restoration at Hessen Kassel Heritage Kadri boasts vast knowledge of wallpaper printing techniques and production methods. She’s methodical when tackling complex restoration tasks. She has excellent manual skills and years of experience. As such, we entrusted her with the most precious objects in the German Wallpaper Museum. Kadri was a very reliable employee. She independently completed all of the tasks assigned to her with her usual confidence. We gained the best result every time. Her behaviour towards her colleagues and superiors was always impeccable. She’s calm, helpful and friendly, all of which made her a valued colleague. |
Ivo Lambing Head of training at Raikküla Manor We’ve been organising restoration courses at Raikküla Manor for years. We’ve worked with Kadri on wallpaper restoration and papier-mâché courses, which have been among our most popular thanks to Kadri’s professionalism and the excellent structure and content of the training. Kadri is the foremost authority on wallpaper and papier mâché in Estonia. She’s a pleasure to work with and has an answer to every question. |
Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani Author, entrepreneur and co-founder of Mindvalley I’m restoring our family home on the island of Hiiumaa, where our family has lived for more than 400 years. I plan to turn it into a farm museum. Restoring an old home is a technical challenge, and there’s always a chance you’ll get it wrong when it comes to making historically accurate choices. At one point, when the interior was being restored, I found myself at a dead end because no one remembered what wallpaper had covered the walls of the living room in the early 1920s, when the building was originally completed. Kadri did an incredible job: based on descriptions given by my relatives, she put together an overview of the wallpaper patterns that were being produced at the time. Thanks to Kadri, I’m moving forward with my project with renewed confidence! |
